Four Days in Xi’an: A Realistic Local Guide
When I landed at Xi’an Xianyang Airport late in the afternoon, I was tired but excited. The city is ancient-looking but moves at a busy modern pace. Here is how I spent four days getting my money’s worth, with honest advice you might actually use.
Getting from the Airport to the City
Don’t try to figure out a metro maze if you have heavy luggage or a tight layover. The City Airport Railway is your friend, but for a typical evening drop-off, a taxi (official ride-hailing apps or designated taxi stands) is easier. From the airport, getting to the city center takes about 40 minutes. I stayed in the Bell Tower area because it connects to everything via food, transport, and nightlife.
Day 1: Arrival and the Food Scene
If you land late, grab a simple hotel near the Bell Tower and Drum Tower. The area is historic but safe for walking at night.
Where to Eat First
The locals swear by Wei Jia Liangpi (Wei Jia Pilamed) for noodles, but don’t worry if you don’t see it. Street food here is everywhere. I had the cold-skin noodle and a burger from there. It was just like its old self, and reasonable for a quick bite.
Later, head to the Muslim Quarter (Hui Min Jie). Yes, it’s crowded, but it works. I tried Shi Jia Bao Zi for buns and Ferris BBQ for meat. The beef and lamb were affordable and tasty. Be ready to find a seat quickly, and yes, the prices look like “cheap meat” on most menus.
Day 2: Wall Towers and the Night Market
Start early. Hit the South Gate Market first to get the feel of the locals shopping before heading to the city walls.
City Wall
Entry is around 54 RMB per person, but check the official app beforehand. Renting helmets is cheaper than expected and lets you see the perimeter. A simple walk starts from South Gate (or Northwest Gate if you prefer).
Big Wild Goose Pagoda: Visit the museum here if you have patience. The main pyramid is the highlight.
Grand Tang Night Market: This is a must-do place, but it is sensitive to weather. I went on Day 2 and the rain cancelled the outdoor performances (puppet shows). If you are planning to see the “Porcelain Princess” dance, check the weather forecast. The restaurants stay open even if the rain comes down, but crowds make the food lines necessary.
Day 3: History and the Warriors
The Terracotta Warriors
I didn’t book the official expensive guided tour because I found private guides online were cheaper and entertaining. I didn’t trust the material to be an “average” experience, but it is an experience everyone needs. The Lishan Mount near the dynasty says you will enjoy the hills.

Wei Sili (Burger/Salad) served a much better burger than the street choice. The open space made it easier to find quiet time to recharge.
Dining: On this day, the Grand Tang Night Market was second time. I waited in line and finally saw the dunking pot show. Note: queuing starts early in the day.
Day 4: The Museum and Cultural Street
Shaanxi History Museum
This is the big box of history. I loved the official guided tour, and the artifacts are hard to miss. Warning: I recommend checking ticketing rules immediately, because securing tickets online usually requires booking five days in advance. They vanish instantly. Do not wait.
Shuyuanmen Street: Shop for takeaway gifts, but don’t expect international brands.
Authentic Food: I tried Zui Chang’an. Traditional Shaanxi flavor, spicy and rich. It was better than the Muslim Quarter options for late-night dining.
Final Thoughts
The trip wasn’t perfect, but I found the food amazing and the history real. I won’t rush back immediately, but if you enjoy the rhythm of life here, they will make you come back.
